The Magic 25: 2003-2005, Mardi Gras Masks and Music

The first time I was properly introduced to the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center was the summer I first moved into the neighborhood. I can’t remember who the featured artist was, but the food at the artist reception (Chicken Mole) was the fastest way to my heart. In no time at all, I was privileged to be volunteering at the little gem across the park from my house.
Mardi Gras, Masks and Music was one of the best efforts for the IFCC to open its doors, show off the unique center and raise some much needed operational funding. The event went on for three years in 2003 to 2005. Having a Mardi Gras theme gave us an excellent opportunity to reach out to local artists who would generously donate their mask artwork to the center. The event also featured wonderful music throughout the building, live talent in the theatre and auctions of the masks so that our guests could take home a piece of the evening while supporting us.
Some highlights about the event are the most memorable to me. I can remember being very inspired the first year by the artful display of Michael Curry Design puppetry in the front lobby. These larger than life designs really helped draw our guests into the showbox of a cultural center that we have in the IFCC. We were also very privileged to have excellent support from local celebrities such as news anchors Ken Boddie and Matt Zaffino, each who gave their time and charming personalities as Master of Ceremonies.
Countless people lent a hand to make these Mardi Gras fundraisers successful. Their success was attributable to the hard work and devotion of the Board of Trustees, generous donors, talented artists, hardworking volunteers and dedicated staff, without whom Mardi Gras would never have taken place at the IFCC.
