Facets of Africa
E.S. Tingatinga
Jan. 31 - Feb. 23
Gallery Hours: Tuesday-Friday 11am-6pm and Saturdays 12pm-4pm
This exhibit, along with matinée theater performances, explores the rich texture and diversity within African-based cultures.
Before his tragic murder in 1972 artist E.S. Tingatinga established a new art form utilizing basic supplies available to him as a house painter- enamel paints and masonite scraps, to expand on traditional Congo painting styles. This is a rare viewing of a private collection of commissioned paintings from Tingatinga’s most established associates and students who celebrate the art form he founded.
We are fortunate also to share sculpture from the worlds largest private collection of Makonde wood carvings. These pieces have a deep connection to the rich history of the Makonde people who have lived on the Tanzania/Mozambique boarder for centuries
Opening Reception: Last Thursday January 31 5:30–7:30 Free
Artist’s Tea: Feb 16, 3:00 Free
