Students Paint Their Community

painting by Ockely Green Students

Jacob Wachira Ezigbo, our visiting artist from Kenya is working with close to 150 students during IFCC‘s Culture Club Outreach this Winter and Spring: Ockley Green School, Portland Village School, Sitton Elementary, Beach and the Tubman Leadership Academy for Girls. Each class will create large canvas group pieces, about what they see in their community (see picture above) and each student will create an individual piece about the role they play in their community.

The Culture Club Residency and Outreach is supported in part by a generous grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council. And Art Media has also partnered with IFCC, giving a generous 30% discount on all art supplies – each student got their own 16×16 canvas, a brush, a piece of charcoal and their choices of red, yellow, purple, blue, black and white high quality acrylic paints, to create their masterpieces. The students will be able to keep their finished individual canvas and their paint brush, which we hope will inspire them to continue expressing themselves in this way.

At Ockley Green, Portland Village School and Sitton Elementary where residencies have been completed, each student spoke in class, up front, about their process, their discoveries and why they chose to paint what they painted. It’s been an inspiring time for all. And it’s not over. In the coming weeks, Jacob will finish the outreach with Beach Elementary and Tubman Academy for Young Women.

It is not too late to partner with IFCC in support of these children and their learning expression and how it links to community and conversation. And the powerful lesson of being able to speak cognitively about their individual creative process.

The total cost for art supplies for the children is $4,120. Art Media contributed $1,236 in discounts. Regional Arts and Culture Council contributed $1,384 toward the art supply portion of the residency. And we invite you to help us cover the remainder of the cost of putting art supplies directly into the hands of children.
